There are so many things that can make improving your dental health a challenge. When you take into consideration how easy it is to develop certain dental issues, such as periodontal disease and tooth decay, it pretty obvious how important it is for you to take preventative action sooner than later. Dr. James Lesinki has five tips for you to use to improve and maintain optimal dental health.

1. Brush and floss your teeth every day. Regular brushing and flossing helps to prevent harmful bacteria from growing inside of your mouth. They also help to prevent plaque and tartar buildup. Be sure to use a toothpaste that contains fluoride and brush your teeth at least twice a day. Do not forget to replace your toothbrush at least three times a year.

2. Use mouthwash daily. Rinsing with mouthwash does not just freshen your breath, it can also help to strengthen the enamel on your teeth and keep your gums healthy.

3. Avoid tobacco products. Tobacco products stain the teeth and increase your risk of developing certain health conditions, such as gum disease and oral cancer.

4. Watch your diet. Reduce your intake of sugary and stain-causing foods and carbonated beverages. Once these substances come in contact with the bacteria in your mouth, they produce acid which eats away at the enamel on your teeth.

5. See a dentist regularly for checkups and periodontal maintenance. It is a good idea to see your dentist at least every six months. If you suffer from gum disease or other dental issues, you should see them more often.

Although your teeth are made of bone, they still need to be cared for in order to protect them from harm. With regular dental care and good oral hygiene, it is possible for you to enjoy good oral health for the rest of your life.
